Storybook Walk

We are so excited to announce the start of our storybook walk at Horn Elementary!!  Around the perimeter of the Horn campus are the pages of a children’s picture book.  Storybook walks are a great way for students to engage with children’s literature while getting exercise in a safe, outdoor setting.  Families are welcome to use the storybook walk after school hours or on weekends.  The story begins at the bike rack on the north side of the school.  It follows the entire inside of the fence and ends by the temporaries on the south side of the school.

Our rules include:

  • Do not touch the pages.

  • Keep your distance from others while reading the story.

  • Students should only read it with a teacher present during school hours (they cannot read it at recess time)

Our first book is All are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. The story should change every few weeks or so!  In order to fund the storybook walk, PTO organized a fundraiser at Sidekick Coffee & Books.   

Fall Fund Drive
This fall, the PTO is purchasing school supplies, student water bottles, mask lanyards, clear masks for teachers, tissues, hand sanitizer, disposable masks, baggies, and playground activities.  We have also increased our teacher reimbursement amount to allow all of our teachers to purchase necessary items.  

No contribution is too small or too large!!!

Iowa City Public Library October Bingo
Happy October! The Iowa City Public Library has a new fall challenge. Print this picture or write the activities on a piece of paper. Mark them off as you go and return your Bingo to the library this month for prizes.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
If you have ideas for events or fundraisers we could do this year, please email hornpto.iowacity@gmail.com.  We are looking for addition parents to be a part of the PTO Leadership Committee.  This is not an appointed position but you would be involved with more frequent communication.  Please let us know if you are interested or know someone who might be!  Our next meeting will be October 21st from 6:30-7:30 on Zoom.  Request the monthly meeting link by emailing hornpto.iowacity@gmail.com.
